Yorktown, VA

Monday, May 3rd,

Today we are riding from Williamsburg, VA to Yorktown to dip our wheels in the Atlantic.  It apparently is some sort of tradition started by bicyclists with lots of time on their hands.  It means that we will ride some twenty miles east, wet our tires, and ride twenty miles back.  I told Jon if he liked he could just bring me a water bottle with some Atlantic water and I would wet my wheel here in Williamsburg.  It appears that idea wasn't acceptable.  By the way This was our route.  We went both ways and ended up back where we started in Williamsburg.

We made it to Yorktown and I of course found a forlorn pirate who thought he knew me from a previous life.  I assured him my beard had never been black.

This was the ceremonial dipping of the tire.  It was from that moment on I knew we would be riding west.  Note the boat at the upper left hand corner of the picture. It was the pirate boat that brought black beard to Yorktown.

It was a good day and the weather was great.  There are possibilities of showers tomorrow but we should be long gone before they hit.

Yorktown is full of history and is actually where Cornwallis had his command.  Also I noted the housing needed to be upgraded.

The end of a perfect first day as we had lunch across from William and Mary's College / University.  Our waitress informed us that William and Mary College was actually big enough to be a University but tradition would not allow the name to be changed.
